#MegaTweetup 2 in Review

Anyone who follows me on Twitter is probably well-aware by now that #MegaTweetup 2 took place last Thursday, December 16, 2010. The event marked the 500th event for the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge, MA. More than 400 people came to celebrate the best in social media, technology, marketing, and business innovation.

The host and man of the hour, Joselin Mane, was nice enough to tap me to assemble a team of students to create a social media control center – similar to what Dell and Gatorade have done. The purpose of this control center is to monitor all sorts of social activity during the event in order to determine MegaTweetup’s social footprint. We were granted accounts to Radian 6 and TweetReach for free to help us in our data collection endeavors.

Two case studies detailing these findings will be released on December 20, 2010 and January 3, 2011, but as a quick teaser, I thought I’d highlight some of the interesting findings below:

370,303 unique people reached with the #MegaTweetup hashtag

2,687 unique tweets (and counting!)

141 check-ins on Foursquare and SCVNGR

85 pictures posted on Twitpic, Plixi and YFrog

Lastly, a huge thanks to all the members of the social media control panel: Mike DeFilippis, Mara Martin, Valentina Monte, Abbey Niezgoda, Rachel Sprung, Lane Sutton, and DJ Switz. Without them, we could not have collected any of this data.

And don’t forget to check out these great recaps as well:
