Joselin Mane (@BostonTweetUp) on Building Social Value

[Editor’s Note: This article was originally written for Emerson Social Media]

Recently, Joselin Mane and David Gerzof organized the #ESMup. #ESMup consisted of the #ESM (Emerson Social Media) class attending five TweetUps in one night in the Boston area. The purpose of this event was to introduce the ESM class to the TweetUp and networking culture. Joselin and David gave students tips on how to use hashtags for various events, and how to use online interactions to create meaningful offline interactions.

While walking from TweetUp number three to four, Joselin Mane began to drop some serious knowledge on how people can increase their social value at networking events. The content was too good to pass up, so I made him re-start so that I could capture it all on camera.

In a nutshell, Joselin Mane recommends that instead of seeking to make connections for yourself, be the person creating connections for others. It’s best to use what you may know about a person to introduce them to another person who would be a meaningful connection. By creating value for others, you can actually increase your own social value. Plus – the more you introduce others, the more likely they will be to return the favor later.
