500 Million? Twitter Says That’s Nothing.

That’s right Facebook. You may have the world’s youngest billionaire. You may have an ultra-successful movie busting the block at this very moment. You might even claim to be the social network of all social networks. But guess what? Twitter doesn’t care.

Your 500 million users are impressive, but Twitter has some plans in store. Some very big plans. In fact, one might even say that Twitter has one billion plans. Reported by Mashable on Tuesday, Twitter intends to hit one billion members according to co-founder Evan Williams.

What’s interesting about this is that Williams pointed out that he was not sure how long it would take to reach this milestone. He did, however, make it clear that these will not be the same users over on Facebook. This is a fascinating comment because predicting such lofty membership numbers is at least an indirect, one-upping shot at Facebook’s party for 500 million members. So it’s clear that the two networks are in competition, yet Williams states that they have different audiences. Furthermore, if one calls Twitter a social network, Williams and fellow co-founder Biz Stone will quickly point out that it is actually an information network – again distancing itself from the likes of traditional social networks like Facebook.

So what’s the deal? Who do we think Twitter’s real competition is – if not Facebook? Finally, I’ll give a free cookie to anyone who can correctly predict the exact date that Twitter reaches it’s predicted one billionth member. Ready? Go!
